Performance

The Berlin Soundpainting Orchestra plays silent films of Georges MÉLIÈS
Live film transforming / live soundtrack composition.

A musical and visual journey inspired by “A Trip To The Moon” and other bizarre movies of the early 20th century by the great Georges Méliès.

Led and conducted by Hada Benedito, the Berlin Soundpainting Orchestra provides the Soundtrack and discovers the interplay between sound and images to create an audio-visual composition in real time. The video artist Andreas Karaoulanis creates animations to reconstruct the visual narration of the films, providing them with rhythmical abstraction.

OREN AMBARCHI, BILL KOULIGAS, PITA aka Peter Rehberg

Oren Ambarchi´s works are hesitant and tense extended songforms located in the cracks between several schools: modern electronics and processing; laminal improvisation and minimalism; hushed, pensive songwriting; the deceptive simplicity and temporal suspensions of composers such as Morton Feldman and Alvin Lucier; and the physicality of rock music, slowed down and stripped back to its bare bones, abstracted and replaced with pure signal. From the late 90´s his experiments in guitar abstraction and extended technique have led to a more personal and unique sound-world incorporating a broader palette of instruments and sensibilities. His latest release is Quixotism which was listed in The Wire magazine´s top 50 releases of 2014.
www.orenambarchi.com
LIVE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlMGxLCTJrk

Bill Kouligas is a musician, designer and dj operating between NYC and Berlin. He is founder of the record label PAN, which recalibrates perceptions of the avant-garde and electronic dance music. Bill’s insistence on following his own path and passion has won acclaim from thinkers, collectors, and dancers alike, and puts his vision at the forefront of the electronic vanguard. After many years of performing and producing experimental music under different aliases this will be an all new live electronic set.
http://p-a-n.org

Peter Rehberg (a.k.a. Pita) is an author of electronic audio works and currently head of Editions Mego. In 1999 he received Prix Ars Electronica Distinction Award for Digital Musics, alongside Christian Fennesz. He also runs the Editions Mego label, formerly known as Mego.
“...stands as the first major musical laptop statement in the same way that Jimi Hendrix’s Are You Experienced album spoke for the most extended instrument-specific modes of the electric guitar three decades earlier.” – David Keenan on Pita´s Get Out.

Chris Newman & Miss Moth & Memory-Thought

Miss Moth
Chris Newman, voice
Erik Drescher, glissando flute (guest)
Johnny Chang, viola (guest)
Seth Josel, bass guitar
Bill Dietz, piano

This concert will start with a piece entitled Memory-Thought (2015, 1st performance), for glissando flute, voice, viola, and bass guitar. It has to do with how the phenomenon of the act of memory and the act of thought are made and is an attempt to build models for these acts using musical material from Beethoven’s An die ferne Geliebte. Memory-thought will be followed by Miss Moth.

“A surreal style mash up not for the faint hearted.” — Time Out London
“Literary, classicist punks.” — The Wire

MISS MOTH is informed by New Wave & Post Punk, but also classical music such as Schubert, Hugo Wolf and literary issues. Rather than eclectic, the songs are a meltdown of material and loves, using personal, but not private, existential words that extend the everyday pushing into the surreal. Some of the songs were written in the 80´s for the band “Janet Smith” but they have been more than rearranged, now they have a fresh and hard edged contour. The songs use many techniques, some are long strophic songs, some 12 Note row pieces, there are a few cover versions. MISS MOTH can be likened to a “rough cut diamond”, a chamber band that plays live and in studio.

The two-day Festival focuses on the world between music and dance. Through improvisation, musicians and dancers meet in a new world in which their contributions blend and mutually influence each other. Different each time, this world beckons to be discovered and explored; how long does movement resonate in space until it fades away? How long does sound move in silence until it is invisible?

2. Friederike Motzkau (flutes), Michael Shapira (dance)

3. Rieko Okuda (Piano), Antti Virtaranta (doublebass), Yuko Kaseki (dance), Michiyasu Furutani (dance)

JAMES EDMONDS (Poetic Realism/UK)
James Edmonds\´ work focuses on the poetic nature of recording, the essence of the photographic, particularly in relation to analogue methodologies and the processing of light into a physically collected material. Between painting, film-making, and music, he approaches his practice as process, often manifesting in small, spontaneous installations, screenings or performances.
